2023 Annual Report

The Consumer Voice in the Energy Transition

Download a copy of SECC's “2023 Annual Report: The Consumer Voice in the Energy Transition”, which summarizes the organization’s achievements in consumer research, education, events and more during the 2023 calendar year.

In 2023, we published three research reports, two white papers and several case studies and added to the consumer education library with a new series of resources on electric rate plans and a video on smart thermostats. We also launched the new Smart Energy Snapshot Series and completed three surveys for this series.

Last year was also a successful year for events as we produced the 2023 Consumer Symposium at DISTRIBUTECH International in San Diego, the 2023 Members Meeting & Fall Workshop hosted by Red Ventures and a series of nine webinars, including a Summer Webinar Series on energy affordability.

Download a copy of SECC’s “Customer Satisfaction and the Smart Grid” report, which explores whether consumers are engaging with the electricity usage information delivered by smart grid technologies and whether they are generally seeing the benefits promised by grid modernization.

Based on a nationally representative survey of 1,500 consumers, the report investigates consumer support for grid modernization (including willingness to pay for grid improvements), awareness of and interest in detailed electricity usage information, satisfaction with and trust of their electricity providers, and more.

The research found that 62 percent of Americans are reviewing usage information at least monthly and that 82 percent of these consumers are using this information to improve the energy efficiency of their homes, including making changes to their daily routines (47 percent) and installing energy-efficient appliances (25 percent).

Download a copy of SECC’s “Electrification at Home and on the Road” report, which explores consumers’ awareness, interests and concerns related to electrifying their homes (space heating, cooking and water heating) and owning and operating an electric vehicle (EV).

Based on an online survey of 1,500 consumers (plus an additional sample of 621 current EV drivers), the report first covers consumers’ awareness of electric alternatives at home and what would encourage them to move away from fossil fuels for the purposes of space heating, cooking (specifically induction cooktops) and water heating.

Moving to transportation electrification, the second half of the report provides an updated profile of today’s EV drivers and findings on where consumers (both EV owners and the general population) typically look for information on EVs, what they think about public charging stations and more.

Finally, the report looks at the synergy between electric vehicles, rooftop solar and home electrification before closing with four recommendations for electricity providers and other industry stakeholders that may advance the march toward an electric future.

Download a copy of the “Consumer Pulse and Market Segmentation – Wave 8” report, which provides a completely refreshed consumer segmentation framework based on consumers’ attitudes around technology and electricity.

This research was conducted from April to June 2022 and included five 30-minute interviews to begin to unpack consumer opinions on key energy topics. These conversations were followed by a 20-minute online survey of 2,500 consumers (weighted to census data for age, gender, region and income).

With the new consumer segmentation, differentiation relies heavily on two primary factors: the individual consumer’s core interest in their electricity usage (and how their usage affects the grid) and their comfort with and use of technology.
